About Me

Revised and Revisable

I used to use this post for the About Me page, but so much has changed it’s not completely pertinent. Still, it’s a good read if you have the time and are interested in my whole story.

With backgrounds in both engineering and computer programming, I have turned my attention to music. My goal is to play as much as I can, develop as a player, write, record, and perform. I also enjoy helping other musicians achieve their goals in whatever ways I can.

My first love in music is piano. Thanks to my big sister Kathy, I own a real grand piano. After that is organ (Hammond B3 style, if you must know. I have a Hammond A-100, which is a B3 in a “home organ” style box), then the Wurlitzer and Rhodes electric pianos (I have the Wurli, but I’ve run out of room to add a Rhodes). I’ll also play clavinet when the funk calls for it. Beyond that are other true keyboard instruments if I get to experiment with them. I don’t dig “faking” instruments such as horns or strings (I once contacted a Rolling Stones tribute band that was looking for a keyboard player. They were recreating one of the Stones’ albums, and they wanted the keyboard player to play the horn parts. I passed).

I also enjoy working on these old instruments. That’s the engineer in me.

I enjoy lots of different kinds of music, and am open to playing many things. That said, blues, jazz, and rock are at my core. Really, anything that swings and has the right groove is what I am about. To me, the best rock has some swing to it, Rolling Stones, Jimmie Vaughan, and others. The straighter it is, the more I’m like, “later for that.”

This blog is about what I’m doing as a musician. It’s a bit of a journal, but I also hope that you find it helpful and that it gives you things to think about in what you’re doing.

He Has Been Found

Welcome John to Blue Funk as the new plank spanker!

After countless auditions, Blue Funk has finally settled on a new guitar player. We'd like to welcome Texas' own John Stoll to the band, and thank all those who tried out. It was a tough decision, as we had many great plank spankers to choose from, each of whom brought their own special personality and talents.

Right now, we will need to get things settled down with John before we open the jams to our guests. We will let you know when we're ready. Hopefully soon, we will also post some new recordings with John for y'all to hear.

John

John is a geeky has-been guitarist who plays too many notes for blues, not enough for rock, spends too much time sniffing solder fumes, and can jest bearly speel. But, he makes a killer amp.

Craigslist Ad Posted

This is the ad we're posting around the 'net

(If you're here to respond to our ad, be sure to listen to our tracks on the "Listen to Us" page, and you can reply using the "Contact Us" page)

We're a laid-back blues/rock/jam band looking for an equally laid-back guitarist. We have mild aspirations toward gigging, but we're not planning on dropping everything and making a living with this thing. In the real world, we're all professionals with stable day jobs, but we enjoy just getting together every couple of weeks to jam for a few hours, with no long-term plans, no strings attached, and no drama.

We play a mix of covers and originals, so if you're also an aspiring songwriter, please don't hesitate to bring that to the table as well. Our songs typically fall under the blues or rock category, with a couple of jazzier tunes here and there, as well as a few that defy genre classification. Our influences include the Allman Brothers, Little Feat, Gov't Mule, Stevie Ray Vaughan, ZZ Top, and Eric Clapton, to name a few.

If you want to know more about us, check out our website at http://www.blue-funk.com, or the dreaded MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/bluefunkzone. We look forward to hearing from you.

You Can’t Replace Him

The search for a new guitar player has begun...

Jeff cannot be replaced. Without him, we would not be anywhere near where we are now. We would not have had the right situation to bring Phil into the band, for instance. We will miss both his talent and his humor and wish him and his family the best. We all are very happy and excited for them. Still, we must move on, and we have begun the search for a new guitar player. We will try one out on October 20, but we will not be opening jams up to our friends until we have chosen a guitar player and we are sure that we are ready to begin playing "publicly" again. Hopefully that point will be soon, but only time will tell.

Phil

Phil was borned on the side of a hill in Arkansas, and comes to us by way of Memphis, having absorbed much of the music and beer of the Delta along the way. He hits things with sticks, and then looks at us as if to say, "ain't I done good?" every time he does.
